Read Around Reward

Reading is a skill for life!

At Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School, we encourage children to read every night. Each class has a Read Around map with a theme or class topic. At the beginning of each week your child’s reading record and journals are checked, if they have read to an adult 3 times a week or more your child will move 1 step along the map.

At the end of term children who have completed or moved the furthest will be rewarded for their hard work with a fun activity. Last year children were rewarded with a Technology Day, Sports and Games and a Board Games Day.

The Read Around reward for this term will be a Treasure Hunt. The children will have lots of fun reading clues and solving problems to find the treasure. The reward will be held on Tuesday 13th December.

Please ask your child what their Read Around is?

FS2 will take part in the Read Around in the New Year.

Thank you for your continued support.

AUTUMN TERM LEARNING IN YEAR 5

September 16, 2011 in Class 5 Handbook, Parents, Year 5 by Mr Wain

This term in Year 5 we will be incredibly busy learning a whole host of new topics, read on to find out what your child will be learning about!

Literacy

In Literacy our learning comes form the autumn term strands of the New Primary Strategy, focusing on 2 narrative units, a poetry unit and 2 non-narrative units. Our target will be reading related this term and there will be an emphasis on questioning from our assessment focus areas. We would appreciate your support in listening to your child read every night. It is important that even the most capable of children still read out loud. Spellings are given and tested weekly, on a Wednesday.

Mathematics

Numeracy lessons follow the Numeracy Framework and your child will be learning topics such as: place value, written methods of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, problem solving, data, shape and space.

Humanities

This term we are studying a history topic, learning about life in a mining community. Our educational visit will tie in with this with a visit to Caphouse colliery in Wakefield where we will go down a real mine. We also hope to enjoy a visit from a friend of the school who used to work in a local mine and as a Mines rescuer. Linked to this topic, we will also be learning about sustainability and alternative energy and about materials

Science

In science we are learning about life cycles of both plants and animals. We will then learn about the earth sun and moon.

R.E

We are learning about Buddhism, faith and practice. We will be also expected to be able to start making comparisons with the other religions that we have studied over the years.

P.E

In P.E the children will be concentrating on gymnastics and movement. In Games they will be learning basketball skills with Mr Smith, a basketball coach that has been working with our school over the last 11 years.

Don’t forget that our school website now includes our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), your children use this to create and save work both at home and at school. We hope that in using this VLE, you will engage with your child and see what they have been doing.

WELCOME TO YEAR 5 – SUMMER IDEAS

July 19, 2011 in Year 5 by Mr Wain

YEAR 5 SUMMER WORK

From September we will be learning all about life in a Coal Mining Community. We will be learning about how coal is made, how technology has forced changes to how coal is mined and how communities have changed over the years.

In preparation for this topic I would like you to ask members of your family what they remember about life in Doncaster as a Mining community.

Some things that you might like to do before September:

  • Interview family of friends who have worked in mining.
  • Find out what sports and interests took place in mining communities.
  • Discover the names of the Mines that once existed in Doncaster.
  • What was the miner’s strike?
  • Where do we get our coal from in the world?
  • What do we use coal for?
  • What alternatives do we have to using coal?

You can present your work in any way you want:

  • Model map
  • Google Docs
  • Power Point Presentation
  • A Report
  • Take photographs / draw pictures
  • Record an interview

Have a good summer holiday and make sure that you come back in September refreshed and ready to go!
