Year 1 Chop, peel, slice ….. Fruit salad – done!

October 16, 2011 in Front Page News, Uncategorized, Year 1 by Mrs COLLINS

Year 1 were lucky enough to have two special visitors on Friday. Mrs Livsey and Miss Livsey came along to help make fruit salads. We used strawberries, mango, kiwis, apples, pears, oranges and grapes. We washed our fruit, peeled, chopped and sliced it to perfection! Then enjoyed the fruits of our labour. We were all very brave and tried new things. Some of us even discovered that we loved mango and kiwi!!!!!! Well done class 1.

Thank you to Mrs Livsey and Miss Livsey for all thier help!

Literacy

Literacy work will be centred around our Topic about Superheroes and Space

The children will be writing stories about themselves and everyday events. Making lists, writing instructions, and using their senses to create poems.

Our focus when writing will be encouraging the children to put finger spaces between words.

Using their Letters and Sounds knowledge to spell out words and knowing that sentences need full stops and capital letters.

Topic

Our Topics this term are All about Me and Destination Out of Space.

In Science the focus will on knowing parts of the body, knowing the 5 senses, and knowing how we grow and how humans differ. We will be looking at healthy foods and ways we can keep fit and healthy.

In our space topic we learn  that darkness is the absence of light – and investigate the best material for blackout glasses.

We explore and describe the way some everyday materials change when they are heated or cooled and identify different light sources, including the sun.

We are hoping to have a visit from a Planetarium – more details will follow!!! Check out www.starlincs.co.uk for a sneak preview.

In our ICT we will be using 2 simple to draw and label ourselves. We will also create an animation of a moving rocket!

Art sessions this term centre around portraits – we will be looking at work by Keith Haring and Picasso.

Possible ways to support your child’s learning

  • Practise adding and subtracting
  • Use everyday opportunities to reinforce problem solving in their head.
  • Spend time reading/sharing a book with your child.
  • Join the local library to encourage reading and support topic work.
  • Try not to impose teaching methods you experienced at school – ask the children to explain their methods to you.
  • Encourage your child to talk about their learning
  • Ensure that they have a quiet and suitable space for the completion of their homework.
  • Encourage them to collect together the things they need for school, including their homework. This will help to develop their independence.

Year one Superhero Senses Day!

September 16, 2011 in Front Page News, Year 1 by Mrs COLLINS

Well it is well and truly back to work in year one! Our Autumn topic for the first half term is All about me and we were off to a flying start today with our Superhero Senses Day! The children used all their senses and had great fun smelling interesting things, touching squidgy jelly and prickly conkers to name but a few! We went on a sound hunt around school and used our taste buds to find out the flavour of different crisps! We made superhero masks and thoroughly enjoyed the day! We hope you enjoy looking at some of our pictures.
